I have spent my career as a physiotherapist assessing, treating, and advocating for Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder and Elhers-Danlos Syndrome. I’m here to help you navigate a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
I’ve battled with the multitude of symptoms that come with these disorders since I was a child. I had a typical experience of being dismissed by many doctors throughout my childhood, until I finally received a diagnosis of EDS in my early 20s (20 years ago, before I even started by physiotherapy degree journey!) I was fortunate enough to be referred to a great physio and OT who both helped me develop tools to manage my symptoms. However, I am well aware that many people are not so lucky. Patients with HSD and EDS are notoriously poorly diagnosed and poorly treated. They often find themselves going through a never ending cycle of fairly useless medical and physio appointments, where their symptoms are dismissed and no helpful advise is given. Some of the bog-standard exercises that dismissive physio give can even make the pain worse!
After completing my physiotherapy degree and initial junior rotation, I made it my mission to help as many people with HSD and EDS navigate life with the best tools possible.
HSD and EDS are notoriously under diagnoses and badly treated, mostly due to a shocking lack of awareness and education in the medical fields. I can attest that in my degree course, we had a grand total of about 15 minutes teaching around these disorders! I was on my own to learn about the science a research we have for HSD and EDS. Fortunately, I was able to work with experts in the field and tap into plenty of good quality research (why is it not taught in medical schools?!) to learn good quality, effective assessment and treatment programs.
I have since gone on to specialize in physical therapy and coaching for both adults and children with HSD and EDS for almost 20 years. I have helped thousands of clients access a proper diagnoses and develop the tools they need to manage their symptoms effectively.
